I just submitted this letter to the editor of the Greensburg Daily News....I do not know whether they will print it so I am posting it here and on facebook just in case they do not. Here it is:
Dear Editor,
I would like to correct the record here on why I resigned from the Downtown Greensburg Development Corporation....yes, it was a "difference of opinion" as was sited in the Greensburg Daily News article about the Alma Taylor fund on !0-5-18 as I was given an ultimatum by Judy Curd who was President at the time to either quit speaking out about political issues or resign from the board. That was an easy choice to me as the politics of this community and what takes place here affects everyone and no one will take away my right to free speech. If in doubt about this I was writing an opinion article called the Humble Rumble for the Greensburg Daily News at the time and I wrote about the ultimatum I was given. I would also like to note that Alma Taylor left the money to the DGDC because of fundraising that myself and others worked tirelessy on (and with no pay) to pay a debt off from the 1980's that was incurred on street renovations in the downtown long before i was on the board. Alma Taylor saw the home tours, the bricks we sold, the fair booths we rented as a lot of hard work we were doing and she did not want to see us have to work as hard as we were. The resignation of the other members did not happen at that time that I resigned as they were not given the ultimatum that I was. I am sure they all had their own reasons for their resignations and they can speak for themselves.

here is the Opinion article I wrote for the Greensburg Daily News as to why I resigned from the Downtown Greensburg Development Corporation.
JEAN'S THE HUMBLE RUMBLE: Blacklisting in the Big City
Jean Johannigman Nov 18, 2008
Jean mug
Greensburg Daily News, Greensburg, IN
Recently the President of a local not-for-profit board that I was a member of walked into my business and asked me to make a decision. This person asked me to either quit speaking out on local political issues or resign from this not-for-profit board. I immediately told this person that she would have my resignation that afternoon as I could not quit speaking out on issues that I felt would shape our community profoundly and for some time to come. Instead, I approached the GDN about writing a local political scene opinion article and this is the result. The above example is a type of blacklisting that I would like to talk about today.
Blacklisting doesn’t just happen on a local level. It also happens on a national level as has been witnessed by the Presidential election. When has any candidate been painted as black as what has happened to VP candidate Sarah Palin with the personal attacks on her, concerning private family matters?
Where am I going with all of this? Well, I feel in the past there have been many good people of our community that have been blacklisted for their participation and trying to stand up for what they believe in politically. When this happens, we the taxpayers are the ones who lose. Why, because normally the people who are resisting the system are the ones who are trying to represent we the taxpayers.
I feel we have some of this going on right now with two of our local city councilmen. I have been in attendance of all the city meetings. I am hearing the whispering around town that these two are just trouble makers. They are causing problems for no reason. ……Is this true OR are they being blacklisted because they are a threat to the system? Are they being blacklisted because they are standing up on issues that are of great importance to our community and want what is best for our community ? Are they standing up because they feel fiscal responsibility and the best investment of the taxpayers money is important?
Rather than believe the whisperings and rumors……I want to encourage each and every taxpayer to do their part. When you hear a whispering…..when you hear a rumor…..and it concerns you and may sway your opinion of this officeholder and how you may vote….pick up the phone and call these people and ask them where they stand and why? It may be the best investment of your time and your dime that you will ever make.
Personally, I am tired of seeing intelligent, hard working, dedicated people go by the wayside as mere victims of politics. Just Imagine, if we as taxpayers do this little bit of homework, what a difference it might make on the water issue, the airport, Lincoln St., the Freeland Road Connector and our future development and impending taxes. Make that difference! Call and ask….don’t assume…..or we all lose!

REVISED: LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Dear Editor,
I would like to correct the record here on why I resigned from the Downtown Greensburg Development Corporation....yes, it was a "difference of opinion" as was sited in the Greensburg Daily News article about the Alma Taylor fund on !0-5-18 as I was given an ultimatum by Judy Curd who was President at the time to either quit speaking out about political issues or resign from the board. That was an easy choice to me as the politics of this community and what takes place here affects everyone and no one will take away my right to free speech. I was on and off this board at various intervals but after the board was in shambles I was also asked to come back on the board and help fix what had gone wrong and I did until I received the ultimatum from Judy. If in any doubt about this I was writing an opinion article called the Humble Rumble for the Greensburg Daily News at the time and I wrote about the ultimatum I was given. Observe the date on the article which was Nov. 18, 2008.

I just received this email and was asked to share it. A lot of homework done here! here it is: Decatur County tax increases. Lonny Wagener Please share with others before election day: In May 2016 the Decatur County Council voted unanimously to raised your automobile wheel tax from $20.00 to $50.00 for each vehicle you own. That represents a 150% increase. This increase became effective beginning January 2017 In October 2017 the Decatur County commissioners and county Council members once again raised your taxes with another unanimous vote. Effective January 1st, 2018 your county income tax increased from 1.33% to 2.35%. What this means is that for every $100.00 you previously paid in County Income tax, you will now be paying $176.70. This increase represents a whopping 76.7% increase in your county income taxes starting January 1, 2018. Something to consider: All through your working life you were taxed a percentage of your income for taxes. what that means is that every time you got a pay raise, the taxing agencies got an automatic tax increase from your pay check. The tax increases are built in with each raise in income you experience. With that thought in mind, why does the "tax percentage" have to keep going up? Do you suppose that it might be because our county is not being good stewards of your tax dollars? Sadly, some of the officials are currently on the ballet for reelection, but unopposed. That means they automatically win another term. Below are links to the news articles. You can read this for yourself. May 2016 The Decatur County Council voted unanimously to raise the county's surtax and wheel tax Tuesday in order to qualify for state matching grants for necessary road funding. The council members seen here are (left to right) Bill Metz, Ernie Gauck, Kenneth Owens, Danny Peters and Kenny Hooten. Councilwoman Geneva Hunt was present as well. Councilman Larry Meyer did not attend Tuesday's meeting and thusly did not vote on the measure. www.greensburgdailynews.com/news/local_news/county-council-votes-to-increase-wheel-tax-surtax/article_af549406-0f2d-5897-8d4a-c307dd2e3d68.htmlCounty Council votes to increase wheel tax, surtax | Local ... www.greensburgdailynews.comGREENSBURG – In an effort to cover the cost of much-needed road repairs, the Decatur County Council moved to increase the county’s surtax and wheel tax ahead of a ... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- October 2017 GREENSBURG – The Decatur County Council voted to enact a special use income tax that will be used for the purpose of funding construction and operating costs of a proposed Decatur County Jail alongside a public safety tax intended to help fund courthouse security and more. The unanimous vote was made at the close of a lengthy meeting that brought to an end months of debate as to whether or not the tax was the solution to funding a project expected to cost at least $16 million. (All six county council members present (Larry Meyer, John Westhafer, Bill Metz, Ernie Gauck, Kenneth Owens and Danny Peters) voted unamously to raise the county income tax 76.7%. During Tuesday’s meeting, the council formally adopted a .5 percent special use income tax alongside a .25 percent public safety income tax and a certified shares tax of .27 percent increase in county income tax. The three taxes raise Decatur County’s income tax rate from 1.33 percent to 2.35 percent beginning January 1, 2018. (This represents a 76.7% tax increase with only a portion of this increase being explained. For example, what is a certified shares tax? ? What is a public safety income tax? My guess is this mostly represents raises. Read for it for yourself below. www.greensburgdailynews.com/news/local_news/council-adopts-jail-public-safety-tax/article_592878b6-1804-59aa-a5f3-b17c6bcebd1a.htmlCouncil adopts jail, public safety tax | Local News ... www.greensburgdailynews.comGREENSBURG – The Decatur County Council voted to enact a special use income tax that will be used for the purpose of funding construction and operating costs of a ... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following link gives the names of all seven (7) our current County Council members and their contact information, the very same members who is so recklessly spending your money. The Greensburg Daily News printed my letter to the editor today...here is that letter:
Where is the transparency in our local government?!?
I have watched patiently as both our local media sources have asked and pursued this question and after 12 years of pursuing this airport expansion they (the city and the airport board) will still not answer the following question:
Who or what entity is backing the bank loan to kick start this airport expansion to finance the eminent domain?
I also have another question: If this proposed expansion is such a "good deal" on behalf of the taxpayers...why won't the bank loan them the money based on the land and buildings they own?!?!
Taxpayers you need to be paying attention as they are NOT answering these questions.
