The investigation on former Turner County Sheriff Roy Wiley is finally being wrapped up, says Craig Rotter, assistant special agent in charge of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Perry office.
Rotter was able to provide detail information to The Tifton Gazette Monday morning about the open investigation on Wiley, which began July 8.
He confirmed that Wiley had provided a small quantity of marijuana to a citizen of Ashburn to give to his wife who has cancer. Rotter noted that the marijuana was being used to train drug dogs.
“He thought that it would help in chemotherapy treatment,” Rotter said.
Wiley resigned at midnight July 31 after serving as the sheriff of Turner County since his term began on Jan. 1, 2009. Judge Penny Thomas recently appointed Chief Deputy Sheriff Charles W. Dean as the interim sheriff on Aug. 4. A special election will be held Nov. 8 to elect someone to fill the remainder of Wiley’s unexpired term, which will go through the end of 2012.
Rotter said Wiley pleaded guilty to violation of oath of office on Aug. 12 and surrendered his police officer certification. Also, the individual who received the marijuana, Billy McCard of Ashburn, was charged and pleaded guilty to misdemeanor possession of marijuana.
Rotter advised that McCard was the only other person charged in connection to this case. However, he noted that there were some deputies involved in picking up the marijuana. He said Wiley apparently contacted the deputies and asked them to pick up the drug from another deputy.
“They didn’t know what it was being used for,” Rotter said. “They thought it was official. Therefore, they weren’t charged.”

You gotta be kidding me!!!!!
Sounds like some lame-ass excuse some pothead would use.
LEGALIZE IT AND TAX IT HEAVILY!
I wonder if the former sheriff will get preferential treatment, or be treated like the "pot distributor" he has admitted to being?
COPS!
Hell they have the best weed.
LMAO
They just get their stash from the evidence locker free of charge.
Talk about double standards and not obeying the same laws that they are paid to enforce.
Sheeeeeeit.
Lock 'em up with his fellow citizens that he has locked up.
