When Roman and I attended Mass this weekend...the priest where we attend addressed the gay marriage law that was just supported by the supreme court.
The priest talked about the lady in the gospel who had a hemhorage that none in that era were able to heal her of as she had tried repeatedly. In that era this woman was considered an outcast. So it was quite brave of her , not only to be in public but to be in the middle of a crowd that was pressing upon Jesus. She had the faith to actually touch Jesus and to be healed. Now Jesus because of the customs and laws of the time could have rebuked her and called her out for even being there. Instead our Lord showed this woman great compassion..
Then the priest related this to the passing of the law to support abortion. when that law was passed , which was against the word of Jesus (not the Church but Jesus word) many were depressed and upset by those that ignore God's word on this, thous shalt not kill. But from that eventually evolved the compassion of the pregnancy care centers.
The Priest then brought up the gay marriage law and stated we must treat this with the same compassion towards those that would violate God's law but that we as Catholics must abide by God's word in spite of the law that was passed we must not state in any way that gay marriage is right or good.
Pope Leo XIII also addressed laws that were not of the natural law (which is God's law and what our constitution was founded on) This is from what Pope Leo said and the link to this article is below it:
"He emphasizes that Catholics need to obey God, even if that brings them into conflict with civil authority. If civil law clearly contradicts divine law, “then, truly, to resist becomes a positive duty, to obey, a crime.” Unfortunately, he finds, societies are more and more frequently instituting exactly the sort of legislation that contradicts divine law".
"Leo, however, has no patience with silence. “To recoil before an enemy, or to keep silence when from all sides such clamors are raised against truth,” he warns, “is the part of a man either devoid of character or who entertains doubt as to the truth of what he professes to believe.” The only ones who win when Christians stay quiet, he says, are the enemies of truth".
“Christians are,” Leo continues, “born for combat.” It is part of their nature to follow Christ by espousing unpopular ideas and by defending the truth at great cost to themselves. One of their main duties is “professing openly and unflinchingly the Catholic doctrine”; a second is “propagating it to the utmost of their power.”
” A negative reaction from the public, far from being a sign of mistaken ideas, can serve as evidence of exactly the opposite fact. “Jesus Christ,” the pope points out, “has clearly intimated that the hatred and hostility of men, which he first and foremost experienced, would be shown in like degree toward the work founded by him.”
