This article paints a realistic picture : United Fund: One in three local families struggle to meet basic needs Posted: Tuesday, March 31, 2015 7:00 am By Boris Ladwig Daily News "Providing help for Decatur County residents remains critical despite the low unemployment rate, Cunningham said. While many people have jobs, those jobs may not allow them to earn enough to be able to afford basic necessities, said Lucinda Nord, vice president for public policy of the Indiana Association of United Ways. “People are working, and sometimes they’re working two jobs, but they’re not making it,” Nord said. According to a United Way analysis of federal data, 13 percent of the county’s households live in poverty, while an additional 22 percent of households earn too little to meet basic needs. Nord said a single person in Decatur County needs annual earnings of about $18,000 to meet basic needs, including monthly expenses of $516 for housing, $170 for food and $341 for transportation. To meet his needs, that single person would have to earn an hourly wage of $9 for 40 hours per week, Nord said". www.greensburgdailynews.com/news/local_news/united-fund-one-in-three-local-families-struggle-to-meet/article_cda2b381-e815-5af4-97d6-33211746bda7.html
