Embracing Enemies and Slapping Friends: America's Newest Comrades in Arms Against ISIS Are Iran's 'Death to America' Crowd
By Benny Avni, The New York Post
The commander of Iran’s terrorist al-Quds force, Qasem Soleimani, was leading the charge Tuesday as Iraqi forces attacked ISIS in Tikrit with de facto US support.
In other words, America’s newest comrades in arms are Iran’s “death to America” crowd.
This is the result of Obama policies that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned this week as he warned America that, when it comes to ISIS and Iran, “the enemy of your enemy is your enemy.”
He might well have added, regarding many longtime US allies, “And your friends are still your friends.”
The administration plainly doesn’t think much of either notion. Egypt, Saudi Arabia and other former US allies in the Gulf watch in horror as Iran’s sphere of influence, its “Shiite crescent,” grows.
Worse is when Tehran’s proxies advance with active American support.
Which brings us to Soleimani’s role leading Iraqi troops, Shiite militias and Iranian operatives in the Tikrit fight.
Notorious for running Iran’s terrorism around the world, Soleimani is designated by Washington for sanctions. Under UN Security Council resolutions, he’s not even allowed to travel outside his country.
Now he’s all over Iraq, however, and the troops he commands are America’s allies there.
“Iran perceives [ISIS] to be just as great a threat to its own security as Iraq does,” Gen. John Allen, President Obama’s point man on ISIS, explained Wednesday on PBS, adding, “We should not be surprised that Iran would be willing to offer support.”
