More needed to combat domestic violence, hunger Posted: Saturday, January 31, 2015 7:00 am By Boris Ladwig Daily News GREENSBURG — The need for services for victims of domestic battery, the hungry and children are still increasing in Greensburg, the leaders of local nonprofit organizations told the Greensburg City Council. Five organizations presented their annual funding requests to the city in a special council meeting Thursday evening. The council will decide in its regular meeting Monday evening whether to grant the requests. Harter said that the council is charged with protecting the common good, including roads, police and fire departments, and he said feeding the community also should be viewed as a critical piece of the local infrastructure because it ultimately aims to lead people on a path of self-sufficiency. Bread of Life requested $20,000 last year and was granted $5,000. The mayor said after the meeting that he has received four additional requests for grants to be paid from the city’s share of the economic development income tax. Those requests came from Main Street Greensburg, the Southeast Indiana Small Business Development Center, the Greensburg Learning Center and the Greensburg/Decatur County Economic Development Corp. Last year those organizations received a combined $120,000, with half of that going to the EDC. The council is scheduled to make decisions on all of the requests at its next meeting, at 7 p.m. Monday. www.greensburgdailynews.com/news/local_news/more-needed-to-combat-domestic-violence-hunger/article_1bb21a34-9ecc-5de7-a19d-05afefe90c5c.html

Kudos to our Prosecutor Nathan Harter for pointing out that the people of our community are an important part of our infrastructure while also pointing out that they need a hand up and not a hand out.
