At a town hall on working family issues on the day of the IRS filing deadline, Obama said the estate tax only affects about 5,000 families, including just 120 households in North Carolina. He said it would cost $270 billion, "which is the cost of the tax breaks I'm giving to 44 million people."
"My view is we don't need tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires. I don't need a tax cut," Obama said.
Obama touted his proposals to help families pay for child care, college tuition and retirement.
Congress hasn't embraced any of the president's ideas.
Obama also was asked about the income gap between women and men and responded it's a personal issue for him since he was raised by a single mother and his grandmother was the family's primary breadwinner.
"Michelle would point out first ladies get paid nothing. So there's clearly not equal pay in the White House when it comes to her and me," Obama said.
But the president said his senior staff is mostly women - he said he has 13 women serving as assistants to the president, compared with 11 men.

INDOT to install temporary traffic signal in Decatur Co. April 17, 2015 By Hannah Carlock DECATUR COUNTY, Ind.—INDOT is installing a temporary traffic signal on the bridge that spans over Interstate 74 on County Road 850 East in Decatur County.indot The traffic signal is set to be installed beginning 7 a.m. Monday. Motorists will be directed around work areas on the Decatur County road, its shoulders and ramps by flaggers. The temporary signals will be used at either end of the bridge to permit access as the bridge will be down to only one lane beginning in mid- to late May. My husband is a liar and a cheat. He has cheated on me from the beginning, and, when I confront him, he denies everything. What's worse, everyone knows that he cheats on me. It is so humiliating.
Also, since he lost his job 14 years ago, he hasn't even looked for a new one.
All he does all day is smoke cigars, cruise around and shoot the bull with his buddies, while I have to work to pay the bills.
Since our daughter went away to college he doesn't even pretend to like me, and even hints that I may be a lesbian.
What should I do?
