Imitation vanilla will repel them ( if you can find any!). Stores are backordering the vanilla as they are a repellent to the buffalo gnats and people are buying it up everywhere

Black Flies or Buffalo Gnats Host: Simuliidae is a small family of blood sucking flies commonly known as black flies or buffalo gnats. Over 100 species are known from North America and new ones are still being described. NO! that's not them ~~~ wait a minute... Thanks for the [glow=red,2,300]warning[/glow], ratman. NO! they're not as big as a buffalo, they don't have horns, they're not covered in hair... why are they called what they 'R'? Who knows but if 'U' see one of those 'suckers' better watch out; they're vicious, annoying, worse than Aussie flies, and they can cause swelling or infection instantly!

Thanks Ratty!! Hubby got a bottle of Buggins at the hardware store. It is deet free. Allot of people can't use deet. It is a insect repellent and annoying flies. Says it plant based ages 1+ 4 fl oz bottle. Vanilla Mint & Rose
Now get this $15.00 a bottle.. I think they saw him coming. Says you can spray it on your hands and rub it on your face. Don't put it on your eyes or lips. You can use on children but don't put it on their hands. Its not sticky either. Its in a spray bottle.
I haven't had to use it myself. I guess they just don't love me enough or I don't stay out side enough.
