Dear Editor,
I love talking to people....and some times they come up with some truly great ideas.
Many of you have heard me pound the concept that if this airport expansion is ever proven to be truly needed that they pursue a regional concept.
I had a gentleman stop by to talk the other day that suggested the regional concept be applied to our local jail crisis.
I don't know about you but this tends to make a lot of good common sense to me.
This gentleman used building a fence around his farm as an example. He said if i build it around an acre it costs this much. However if i build it around multiple acres the costs drops profoundly.
We know we have our own multiple local offenders but we also take in other offenders from other counties as well. If a regional facility were built for the violent offenders then the additional savings could be put into transforming current facilities for rehabilitation and minimal offenders creating a much better all around program for our entire region.
Has a concept like this been researched? If not, i think this gentleman made good sound sense in his reasoning. Building a bigger jail in and of itself does nothing to solve the repeat offender problems....however making more profound efforts towards rehabilitation can. I know our prosecutor is interested in a rehabilitation program, so why not give it a better start as there would be more money available if we didn't have to build this new facility by ourselves. Share the costs and share the improvements for our region.
