My letter to the editor of the Greensburg Daily News dated 10/31/17

Dear Editor,

I want to encourage everyone in Decatur County to read a Greensburg Daily News (GDN) article titled: "Batesville airport closing Dec. 1" by Joshua Heath

It clearly explains what it takes for an airport to exist. It also clearly explains that Batesville Aviation would be interested in a "regional pursuit".

While our local airport board claims they are self supporting the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) clearly states the following:

"Research has shown that only the larger, major airports are financially self-supporting. General aviation airports seldom bring in enough revenues to meet their costs. Although some small airports ostensibly can cover their costs, in most cases this claim is the product of using accounting practices which disguise costs and do not reflect true financial operation."

I have been advocating that if our airport expansion is truly PROVEN to be needed through a return on the investment study that it should be pursued as a "regional endeaver" in order to give it the best chance of remaining off of the backs of the taxpayers to support.

When i suggested to the aviation board that they "join" in this pursuit with the Batesville airport i was told they were not interested . That they wanted it over there and we want it here and we just cannot come together on a regional pursuit. The GDN article shows that is just not true and that Batesville Aviation is willing.

I would suggest that every taxpayer in decatur county act now to reflect to our Mayor and City Council AND County officials who showed support for the expansion at the current site to contact these officials and state that you want a return on investment study to prove the need and if the need is there that you want it to be a regional pursuit.

Batesville Aviation had a stellar team in place and still could not make a go of it on their own. Why do we want to place ourselves in a position that will according to the NTSB end on the backs of the taxpayers?

Act now! Call your City and County elected officials.

Cars will race at Batesville Airport

Weekend events begin July 14-15
BATESVILLE - Infinite-Speed is coming to the Batesville Airport and bringing with it an unexpected set of vehicles.

When planes aren’t taking off and landing, exotic cars will be competing on a runway.

“A half-mile shootout is heads-up racing, side by side,” explains Eddie Perry, Cincinnati. He and Steve Miller, Covington, Kentucky, are Infinite-Speed co-owners and chiefs of operations. There are three equal investors: Perry; Miller; and Charles “Shorty” Whittington, Grammer, and son John Whittington, Burnsville, who own the airport.

Events are scheduled on two weekends each month through November, weather permitting, from 9 a.m.-6 p.m.: July 14-15 and 28-29, Aug. 11-12 and 25-26, Sept. 8-9 and 22-23, Oct. 6-7 and 20-21, Nov. 3-4 and 17-18. The airport is located at 25222 Enochsburg Road northwest of downtown Batesville.

The co-owner points out, “This will be one of the few fixed location half-mile events in the country.” Other event holders travel from airport to airport because “most airports aren’t in the position to shut down on a biweekly basis.”

Shorty Whittington says, “We think it’s going to be a great opportunity and a revenue generator.”

When the cars are flying past, airplanes won’t be, he assures (please see box).

The fee for drivers during this year’s soft launch is $200 a day. Spectators can watch and daydream for $15 all day. The website www.infinite-speed.com should debut very soon. Persons with questions can email [e-mail].

What will spectators see? “A lot of exotic cars you wouldn’t expect to see lining up side by side, anywhere from 500- to 2,000-horsepower cars. That is a lot of power,” Perry observes.

“The half-mile record was just set at 259 mph on a completely street legal car that had AC, radio, everything. We’ve reached speeds up to 185” at the Batesville Airport, where cars recently tested the runway on three days, including last Saturday.

These won’t be beaters you would see at a demolition derby. Their target market are wealthy owners of high-end vehicles - Lamborghinis, Ferraris and Porsches, for instance - who have competitive streaks. And the racing enthusiasts won’t all be men. “There’s a few women out there.”

These cars typically are priced from $60,000 to $300,000, according to Perry. “I’ve seen $1.2 million cars going to half-mile events.”

What types of drivers compete? Perry answers, “Almost all of them are pretty well experienced in the half-mile racing world. Most of them travel from other states.” When he attended a half-mile event in French Lick, “we had guys all the way from Texas.”

It’s an expensive hobby for those with a penchant for fast, eye-catching cars.

While drivers could arrive in Batesville from across the U.S., “the most dominant state for this type of car and clientele is Texas. They have the biggest roll racing (cars cross the starting line going 40 mph). We will be doing dig racing as well. You start from a dead stop, then accelerate.”

Perry predicts, “We will be doing class racing after the first couple of events.” Those classes could range from all-wheel and rear-wheel to four-door Cadillac CTS-Vs. He notes, “Almost every auto manufacturer offers a high-performance car in a four-door now as well.”

Events will be more targeted to drivers and who they bring than spectators, who will stand in sectioned-off areas. “We will have a food truck there.” No alcohol will be permitted at the track.

“As Infinite-Speed grows as a company, we do intend to grow the facility” by adding bleachers, shops and vendors, and perhaps multiple food trucks, catering or a grill.

When asked whether noise is going to be a concern for nearby homeowners, he answered, “No. Almost all of these cars, because of the nature of them, exotics, they are very fast cars, but they’re quiet. None of these guys want to take their cars to dinner and have them sound like race cars.” The noise should be “significantly less than most hot rods with definitely a lower decibel level than a plane flying in.”

In addition to those 20 days of half-mile competition, Infinite-Speed owners will rent the runway and its 17,000-square-foot south hangar for private half-mile contests.

He gave an example. A Chicago rally group going from that city to Atlanta could make a stop here to do fun runs. At the group’s last rally there were 38 exotic cars, all with at least $400,000 price tags.

How it began

After working for a startup, the co-owner is excited to explore this venture full time. Perry has been involved with these types of events for a few years. “I’ve grown up around racing my entire life,” he reports. “My dad’s father raced when I was younger. My dad was into cars. I raced go-carts when I was younger. I have a project car I’m working on” (a Corvette-powered Datsun 280Z). With a family and home to care for, “it’s far from being finished.”

Perry learned about this site when he called around Cincinnati area airports searching for a location. He likes where it’s located. “Oldenburg is a very attractive little town” that he knows will charm visitors.

Of Perry, Shorty Whittington says, “He and Steve are really committed to this.”

Before deciding to allow half-mile events at the airport, the Whittington father and son “did a lot of homework .... We had to make sure we were totally legal with everything.” The elder Whittington already has the blessing of Franklin County Area Plan Commission and Building Department executive director Cindy Orschell and the Indiana Department of Transportation Aviation Division.

Local economy will benefit

“We think we can bring 150-200 people in for a weekend event, which will be good for the economy of the area,” Whittington points out.

Perry agrees Infinite-Speed will boost the economy here. “After an event, if you have 300 or 400 leaving at 6 p.m., they’re immediately going to go for food. There are a lot of different food places around here, gas stations, small businesses, convenient stores, everything from CVS to grocery stores.”

“We’re utilizing as many local businesses as possible.” They bank at First Financial Bank, Batesville, and will be ordering signs and T-shirts here soon.

When the investors went to the French Lick event last year, which was limited to 75-100 cars, “it was unbelievable the revenue it brought in for that one event,” Whittington raves.

He adds, “We think there’s the possibility of some employment if it goes well,” such as skilled workers to run facilities for dyno testing. “We’re looking forward to it.”

Airport status

After the Batesville Airport closed Dec. 1, 2017, it is operational now with a couple employees there on a daily basis, according to Whittington.

To increase revenue, the father and son are renting hangars to a handful of local residents who own planes. “We’ve still got one hangar left” to rent.

With Infinite-Speed using the facility 20-30 days out of the entire year, the rest of the time the private airport with public usage will be open “for people coming and going, doing business in Batesville. We’re excited to offer that opportunity back to the community ... to get that airstrip back open will be very beneficial.

“We think this new business venture will give us enough revenue to keep the place open.”

On Monday evening 4/27/2020 the Greensburg Board of Aviation had a "virtual" meeting.

I have obtained a recording of that meeting from Butler, Fairman, Seyfert (BF&S). If anyone would like to hear this you can contact me by email at : [e-mail]. I also have at the bottom of this post WTRE's report on this meeting.

I joined in that "go to meeting" in order to see what would be discussed and to observe a "go to meeting" because we have emphasized to the city and to this board how this is the wave of the future because of the expense of owning and maintaining a plane for business use. How ironic.

At a time when we are "sheltering in place" from a pandemic, our City Board of Aviation Commissioners felt it was imperative to have a "virtual" meeting to proceed with eminent domain on a project that 70 some percent of the taxpayers in this community stated they were against.

Put yourself in the position of the landowners for a moment. They are dealing with this pandemic just as the rest of us are and now they have eminent domain to add to the mix.

While the airport board meeting gives the impression that this is merely a slam/dunk...3 of the property owners are taking them to court on this action.

The airport board even lost one of it's loyal members to this tragic pandemic and yet they move right along.

While this is all legal....I find it morally a disaster for our community. Important decisions such as this should be made in a normal meeting atmosphere as this does not affect the life and death of this community as the pandemic does. It is however, life changing for the people who are losing their property and the property surrounding this project which will have their property value affected.

It is also touted in this meeting how the "Covid grant" from the government will now pay 100 % of the project. The impression is that this is not our money and yet it is. If the large airlines fold under this pandemic and / or your ticket prices go through the roof in trying to sustain this....it does impact all of us for an unwanted and unneeded project. Oh the glory of "free" money. We will just print some more.

4/29/2020 - Airport Board moving forward with land acquisitions -


The Greensburg Board of Aviation Commissioners met on Monday.

GBOAC Attorney Don Tribbett gave the appraisals to the board for the 4 properties land is needed from. Fred Sterchis 15.362 acres came to a total appraisal of $259,740. Charles and Diane Beggss 62.446 acres were appraised at $594,300. Marc and Shirley Hastons 26.925 acres were appraised at $370,000 with an avigation easement of $7,000 for 17.118 acres, totaling the appraisal at $377,000. The Goddard familys 52.842 acres were appraised at $667,875. The motion to approve the payment of the appraisals and take possession and ownership of the properties with eminent domain was approved. These cases are pending in Decatur Circuit Court. According to court reports, attorneys for the properties of Beggs, Goodard, and Haston have filed exceptions to the appraisals and jury trials are being requested.

The current property owners of the appraised properties will be allowed to farm the land once the land acquisition is completed. The airport board approved leases for each property, with crop deadlines of November 30 and a rent of $10. This lease will only be for the 2020 year and all of the leases are identical.


The motion to pay the appraisal bill totaling at $38,207 was approved.
The board also approved the Grant Application for the airport to offset losses in fuel revenue and other operation losses due to Covid-19. The rules for the application is that anything filed has to be anything the airport would normally spend money on.
