So here's the question: If originally -- bazillions of years ago -- there was Absolutely Nothing, wouldn't there be Absolutely Nothing now?
Yes. For something -- no matter how small -- cannot come from Absolutely Nothing. We would still have Absolutely Nothing.
What does that tell us? That Absolutely Nothing never existed. Why? Because, if Absolutely Nothing ever existed, there would still be Absolutely Nothing!
If Absolutely Nothing ever existed, there would not be anything outside it to cause the existence of anything.
Again, if Absolutely Nothing ever existed, there would still be Absolutely Nothing.
However, something exists. Actually, many things exist. You, for example, are something that exists, a very important something. Therefore, you are proof that Absolutely Nothing never existed.
Now, if Absolutely Nothing never existed, that means there was always a time when there was at least Something in existence.
What was it?

Science tells us that energy cannot be created nor destroyed. Its state of being can change. So my answer at the moment is going to be energy.

Yep, pretty much what Sweeper said. Although, the nature of that energy is unknown. Even it's origin is completely mysterious. Meaning that we simply don't know where it might come from.
It's very exciting to seek the answers, though.

I think the wording scientist choose to use leads people to the nothing from nothing conundrum. You are absolutely correct. Nothing begets nothing. However,I believe that the big bang was a result of energy of some sort with extreme potential, that reached a certain breaking point and erupted as the big bang. Where that energy comes from, what it is, etc., is up for grabs. There is one theory called m-theory which allows for additional planes of existence called m-branes that might spawn new universes when they collide, sending enormous power through the process that we detected as a big bang.
Of course theoretical physics on that level involves a certain amount of estimation and is therefore suspect to scrutiny. The only thing for certain is that we don't know.
